What they did
The poster upgraded their ChatGPT plan to try Dots, OpenAI's always-on agent, and gave it everyday jobs. First it was asked to do some work on a local Home Assistant server; it took a lot of back and forth to connect, and it kept saying it could not reach the browser even though the browser window was visibly open and logged in. Installing the ChatGPT Chrome extension made browsing work most of the time, at the cost of keeping Chrome running. Then they gave it a page of step-by-step instructions with a materials list and asked it to find the items on Amazon and add them to the cart. They also connected it to email.
How it went
Two of three items were added. The Dot said it could not find the third, then on pushback added a different part it said might work, then something closer but still wrong. Regular ChatGPT did the same job correctly on the first try, in half the time, and suggested extras. Browsing through the extension works roughly four times in five. Email handling was selective and the Dot stayed quiet unless messaged first, even after being asked to be more proactive. The poster says only a handful of tasks succeeded and regrets the upgrade. Others in the thread had the opposite experience: one Dot reminded its owner of a promised demo feature and offered to draft an email to move the demo; another manages project plans and messages only when it hits a question.
Worth knowing
A commenter noted that asking the Dot questions is free and only actions draw down usage, which the poster had not realised. Reliable browsing needs Chrome plus the ChatGPT extension. Results varied widely across the 59 comments, so expect setup to matter more than the task.
