What they did
The poster, u/M00N_Water, wanted their main Home Assistant dashboard to look like MU-TH-UR 6000, the computer in the 1979 film Alien, with the house as the ship and the family as crew. They say they cannot code. They described the look to Claude, sent it clips from the film as reference, and Claude made the changes directly in Home Assistant through the Home Assistant MCP server. The poster steered by feel, asking for more glitch or a quieter hum, over many rounds.
How it went
The dashboard plays a boot sound as the top cards flicker in, loops a low hum with a random glitch noise every minute or two, and adds scanlines, grain and tearing panels. The header lists who is home as crew aboard and counts faults, beside a panel of things needing attention such as dead sensors, offline cameras, low batteries and updates. Two outdoor cameras drive motion tracker cards that ping and open the live feed when tapped. Doors, lights, heating and server stats are relabelled as ship systems. The post drew 173 upvotes. The poster calls it a work in progress: built for desktop, with a bottom half that needs a better layout.
Worth knowing
It is a fun extra, not a replacement: the poster keeps their default dashboard for daily use. One commenter thought the result was little more than flickering green text on black. Giving the agent reference clips from the film was how the poster got the look across without writing code.
